Baterz

baterzNo squidblog would be complete without a listing of favourite squid songs, and any listing of squid songs must begin with the dear departed Baterz:

Giant squids at the bottom of the ocean
Have a better time than we
Giant squids at the bottom of the ocean
Have a much better time than we do.

The have fun, they have fun
They have great big squiddy fun
In the dark, in the cold, in the deep.

They’re the hugest creatures
Anyone saw with their eyes
But nobody’s ever seen them and not been telling lies

Boy do they know how to have a good time
Slappety slappety slap
Flapply flappy flap
Glib glop glap flop
Glib glap glop flop
Mmmmm, mmmmmmm

A million tons of pressure
And a million miles of room
Squirt a million gallons of ink into the gloom.

The have fun, they have fun
They have great big squiddy fun
In the dark, in the cold, in the deep.

- Baterz, “Giant Squids”, from “Baterz Out of Hell”
(low quality mp3)

A rather moving obituary to Baterz also mentioned this remarkable fact:

Soon after Baterz’ death a 200 kg giant squid was found washed up on the shores of Tasmania, and those familiar with Baterz’s work couldn’t help but suspect it was one last goodbye.

Actually, according to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, the squid washed up two days before Baterz died. Another article on this event is here.

dear Squidblog, I came across your site while searching for images of squid love to attach to an mp3 of our own squid song, “The Ecstasies of Ten-Armed Copulation” (from a line in the Patrick O’brien nautical series) which discusses the difficulty of finding and keeping a squid lover. check it out–and if you like it, write it up! thanks & enjoy.
